Brethren,

Over the last two months, 18 Brothers from the Charlotte Scottish Rite were honored to present Scottish Rite JROTC Medals and Certificates to an outstanding cadet at their High School’s JROTC Awards program. This took place at over 32 schools across the Valley, with a total of 40 medals actually provided (not all schools held an official ceremony). One ROTC medal was presented to an Air Force ROTC cadet at UNC-Charlotte.

The medal depicts the double headed eagle and reads: “Scottish Rite” and “JROTC Education & Americanism,” emphasizing two of the major focal points of the Scottish Rite.

The stated purpose of the JROTC program is to “Take Young People and Make them Better Citizens.” Part of the criteria for award is that the cadet be in the top 25% of his or her academic class and have contributed the most among cadets in demonstrating Americanism in their actions, in extracurricular activities and community projects. All the Commanders of the JROTC units I spoke with were thrilled to have a representative from the Scottish Rite there to recognize the achievements of one of their cadets.

Thank you to the following Brothers for your commitment to the Scottish Rite by presenting these awards on behalf of our Valley:

Paul Aulbach Bob Erwin David Lovingood
Gilbert Bailey Joe Faulkner David Ludlow
Tim Berly Junior Harward Bob McIntosh
Eric Cable Nigel Hawkins Brandon Penley
David Carmichael D.C. Heilman Mark Whitten
Clyde Earley James Howell Pat Yount

and to Deb Ballard, our Administrative Assistant, for her invaluable assistance in coordinating this activity.

Tim Berly, 32°, KSA
Chair, Americanism Committee
Valley of Charlotte

———————————————————

As an aside, David Ludlow arrived late for the Ardrey Kell H.S. Marine Corps JROTC program (he and I were going to jointly present) but was actually there just in the nick of time. The audio system had failed and their Commander had wanted to play the Marine Corps Hymn; partially to needle the school’s Principal, an Army Reservist/Transport Pilot, who had just returned from serving in Afghanistan just a few months earlier. David marched in wearing his KSA formal Scottish regalia, playing the Hymn on his bagpipes; and was the hit of the evening!

January 12, 2011

Brethren,
As we discussed during our January Stated we have four events coming up. If you were not at the Stated we could use your help with four events that we have planned. Below you will find the event, the location and times. We could use all the help we could get from volunteers. Let me know by calling the Temple at 704-365-3579, if anyone can attend our first event with the Special Olympics in January. The second event concerning the Special Olympics will be in April. You will find all the dates and time under the next block.

Another event we have planned for March is the “upfit” of the Ronald McDonald House. Once they receive there temporary Certificate of Occupancy, we will need a lot of Brothers to set up furniture in the 28 bedrooms for the parents, set up common areas with books, toys, games and supplies, plus put the kitchen in order. By February, the Director of the house will have dates and times for this project in March. Then we have been invited back for the Grand Opening, this is also suppose to be in March. This is our time to shine in front of Charlotte, there will be television and radio stations broadcasting live. Please wear your Lodge shirts or jackets with any Masonic Emblem on your clothing. We will have Lodges from all over, The Scottish Rite and Shriners all working for the same cause.
I look forward to working with all of you for this Community Event.

The next thing I have planned is here at the Temple on Saturday, April 2nd from 9:00am until 2:00pm for a blood drive. I have arranged for the Community Blood Center to have two buses out in the driveway, they will be providing all the drinks and snacks. I have arranged for a local radio station to broadcast from this location to bring in more people. We have a goal of 100 units. Plus, I have met with the Directors of the Blood Center and the Ronald McDonald House. Identify yourself as a Mason and for every pint given by a Brother, a parent will receive one free night at the Ronald McDonald House.

I am hoping that we will continue these traditions every year and it will continue to get larger and better each time. I have guest speakers coming to our Stated Communication to do a short presentation and hand out information about each event. Thank you for whatever you can do and show up for. This will really help put Masonry in the eyes of the public throughout our community.

Please call me if you have any questions.

Fraternally,

Brad Hufeld

Masons Helping Children has just completed two fall festivals. Mint Hill Madness and Midland Magic.

Mint Hill Madness….. was a new arrangement this year as we were down town instead of the park. We had our choice space and with the ingenuity of Gary Eisenhower and Scott Carriker, our booth was arranged for festival visitor to come THROUGH our booth instead of the usual walking up to speak with us. Another plus was we knew a lot of the people and most of the town officials came by to see us and to tell us Mint Hill residents are more aware of what Masons do because of our presence at Mint Hill Madness over the past few years. Illustrious Sir Wayne King has been very
supportive of us this year and made it part of his busy day to spend some time with us. Another special guest was Miss Mollie Carlson, Shriner’s International Patient Success Story of 2009-2010. They created a video of her life’s journey with The Shriners Hospitals.
As usual when our effervescent hospital coordinator, Jan Garmon, walks up, thing begin to get more aggressive. She is a top notch supporter of Oasis and it shows. Max Walker decided in Blowing Rock that Shrine color books and crayons were going to be a gift to the children this years at our festivals so we gave away a lot of them. We asked the parent to read the message to the child on fire safety and we asked the child to color between the lines…..as best they could. Obvious success stories for this festival were;
Two parents wanting to know more about RiteCare, at least two teachers asked Jan Garmon for color books for their schools. One young Mint Hill man said he had been thinking about joining Masonry but just had not taken the time to peruse membership. Mint Hill 742 has this man’s name and will following up.

We did receive a few small donations, which we did not solicit and will be given to the proper charity. Mid morning on Sunday the rains came down and Mint Hill Madness was history at that point.
Participants at this festival were Dick and Jan Garmon and grandson, Max Walker, Mack Archer, Brad Orr, Joe Killough, Kent Schevlin, Gary Isenhour, Scott Carriker, Zeph Wester, Jr. Harward and Don Wilson.

Midland Magic…. was greeted with cool weather on Saturday and Sunday.Oct. 2nd and 3rd. This is truly a family festival and again our booth was under two large Bradford Pear trees beside the trailer selling both raffle and ride tickets. We again had the Arena Racing Cars with us and as usual they draw lots of attention for fathers and children. Our space was great and we were allowed to spread out our WOW statements. I must admit they did not get the response I had hoped, but, all was not lost as we used them when we could. RiteCare got attention again with interested parents. The coloring books and crayons were a big hit and anytime Mack Archer is working there is always candy for the kids and needless to say that always goes over big. We were able to direct one mother to more information on Shrine Hospitals.

Sometimes it breaks your heart when you listen to stories about children who need help. This particular time we talked to a mother who’s child has a brain tumor and obviously that does not fit into The Shrine Hospital’s menu of services. The child is in a hospital in Houston, we never say no because after the tumor is removed the child may need orthopedic help and our doctors will make that
call. I had a long talk with a lady who works for the state of North Carolina as a consultant with DSS and works closely with child placements. I can’t help being encouraged when I talked to someone like that, however, often I come away disappointed, but I will continue to try as I will again peruse this avenue for our Masonic Home for Children. Participants this time were Max Walker, Mack Archer, Kent Schevlin, Gary Isenhour, Scott Carriker, Zeph Wester, Jr. Harward, Henry Kirk and Don Wilson.

It has been fun having Dennis the Menace along with us this year and our thanks to Cartoonist Marcus Hamilton.

Next week is Waxhaw Autumn Treasurers – Saturday and Sunday, October 9 -10. From there we will meet and discuss our effort this year and how to proceed from here. If you have a suggestion, please pass it along as we continue to look for new ideas. You know as well as I do that the life blood of any organization is it’s members and that is especially true with our Masonic Fraternity. We are men who together identify with Children who do not have a safe home and good meals to come home to, children who can’t get it together in a learning environment, but should not be left behind. Children who have spinal disorders, Cleft Palest and the Crippled and Burned children have been identifies as OUR KIDS

Fraternally,
THE SCOTTISH RITE CHILDREN’S LEARNING CENTER

From Director Anne Hollowell
I know everyone wants to hear WOW stuff, but our kids have to work very hard
to make progress. I think many of them come to a fork in the road and turn
down a different path because of this Center. We think they are the WOW
factors in our work.
———————–
From a parent
I just had to write you and tell you what the fruits of your labor and the
love in your hearts have produced. Because of you loving and believing in
our son when you had him, HE HAS STAYED ON THE A/B HONOR ROLL FOR THE LAST
TWO YEARS and is being inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. I
truly believe if you hadn’t been there for him after our 4th grade fiasco,
we would have been dealing with another child. You never gave up on him.
You used strategies to teach him DIFFERENTLY…and HE SUCCEEDED!!! We will
never be able to thank you enough.
—————————————————————————-
————————————–
From Greenville Hospital the WOW statements are in pictures wait until you
see them.
