MASONIC MEMBERSHIP CARD
I hold in my hand a little scrap of paper 2 ½ x 3 ½ inches in size. It is of no intrinsic worth, not a bond, not a check or receipt for valuables, yet it is my most prized possession. It is my membership in a Masonic Lodge. It tells me that I have entered into a spiritual kinship with my fellow Masons to practice charity in word and deed; to forgive and forget the faults of my brethren; to hush the tongues of scandal and innuendo; to care for the crippled, the hungry, and the sick, and to be fair and just to all mankind. It tells me that no matter where I may travel in the world, I am welcome to visit a place where good fellowship prevails among brothers and friends. It tells me that my loved ones, my home, and my household are under the protection of every member of this great Fraternity, who have sworn to protect and defend mine, as I have sworn to protect and defend theirs. It tells me that should I ever be overtaken by adversity or misfortune through no fault of my own, the hands of every Mason on the face of the earth will be stretched forth to assist me in my necessities. And finally it tells me that when my final exit from the stage of life has been made, there will be gathered around my lifeless body friends and brothers who will recall to mind my virtues, though they may be few, and will forget my faults, though they may be many.It tells me that and a great deal more, this little card, and makes me proud, yet humble, that I can possess this passport into a society of friends and brothers that are numbered in the millions.

Update for Masonic Charities for Kids
1. Represented at five (5) Spring, Summer and Fall Festivals
2. Even though we were not out to recruit members we talked to several men with interest in membership and their names and phone numbers were passed to the lodges in their area.
3. The reputation of Masonry is excellent, out of the hundreds we spoke with, only one man talked negatively about the fraternity and thankfully he approached me.
4. Shrine Hospitals are well know, however, the Learning Center and the Masonic Home at Oxford do not have such a reputation yet.
5. We met men and women with smiles on their faces as they recalled The Childrens home at Oxford home.
6. Parents are proud of the improvement in students, who have been helped by the Learning Center Teachers. You cant comprehend what goes on in this building until you talk to students, parents, and grandparents and hear how lives have been turned around because of the Learning Center and these talented Teachers.
7. The success this year is due to 6 Masons. Our plan is to be back next year taking advantage of what we learned this year, and the need for others to get involved with us is great. We have ask to come to fish fries and bar-B-ques with our displays and talk about our charities. We have even received 2 calls from Lodges across the state that would be impossible to get to at this time.
8. I have said before we are not on anyones budget or committee, we, through the generosity of several Brothers have paid our expenses.
9. We own our own tent, two 8 foot displays, tables, chairs, pictures, and signs.
10. Our plan was never to attempt to raise money for the charities, our plan was to disseminate information on our charities. People came by and insisted we take their donations, it was never much, but we have an account of every penny and it will be divided with the three charities in December.
11. Is there a way we could become a fund raiser for the Charities? We will be talking about this and other ideas over the winter.
12. May I say again, we plan to do this next year. Come help us, it feels good.
Fraternally, Don Wilson
MASONIC CHARITIES FOR KIDS – REPORTING ON MATTHEWS ALIVE 2008
- This was the 16th Annual Matthews Alive Festival, however, I think the festival has been in existence much longer than that, but under another name. I want to say it was called Stumptown Festival, but I am not sure. The Masonic Charities for Kids display was there for the first time at the invitation of the Matthews Masonic Lodge. They have sold hamburgers and hot dogs, with all the trimmings, for many years in front of their lodge building, with great success, as we found out, when the public came looking for these men and their burgers.

New Web Site – Treasures of North Carolina Masonry
Check out this new site by Brother Walter Klein and the Grand Lodge of North Carolina Public Relations Committee. There are a lot of stories that would make excellent Masonic Education short talks for a Lodge meeting! Here’s a preview:
| A man, a college, a lodgeall dedicated to future Masonic leaders. The man is Herbert Lloyd Wilkerson. The college is Wilkerson College. The lodge is Wilkerson College 760. Even Brother Wilkerson makes the mistake of viewing his career as Marine Major General as past. In fact, it forms the steel framework of his position today as leader among leaders. North Carolinians think of him as Commanding General of Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base. The military world relates him to combat in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, from CG of the Third Marine Division and CG of the III Marine Amphibious Force in the Far East. They know he led the NC Governors Commission for Military Affairs for ten years and as author of History of Military Lodges in Freemasonry. (continued… |
